Which is more secure iOS or Android?

It is evident now that smartphone apps have became an integral part of our daily life and security, should be a matter of concern when we are planning to purchase an application. Times have changed now. Today, cyber criminals are targeting smartphones and tablets more often. So, it has become more important than ever to make sure your mobile devices are secure and personal information should stay private. Moreover, it forces us to think one question: which mobile operating system is more secure, Android or iOS?  You can never be completely secure on a mobile device, regardless of which platform you use. As consumer use their mobile devices for banking, connecting on social media, and making online purchases, cybercriminals are aiming their virus and malware attacks on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.  For years, iOS has enjoyed the reputation as the most secure mobile operating system but there are lots of changes which Android has also followed in recent years. Before we begin to compare the two operating system, let us see what are some of the common threats to mobile phone users?

  • Malware Attacks
  • Phishing or social engineering attacks
  • Data breaches
  • Security weakness in hardware and software

Android vs iOS: The threat level

As Apple operating system is a closed system that why it was considered more secure of the two operating systems. Apple doesn’t release its source code to app developers, and the owners of iPhones and iPads can’t modify the code on their phones themselves. This makes it more difficult for hackers to find vulnerabilities on iOS-powered devices. And Android on opposite side depends on open-source code allowing the owners to tinker with their phones which make the phone more vulnerable for hackers to find it. Moreover, Android is more targeted by the hackers because of its global popularity. This OS is a soft target of the malware and viruses that these criminals unleash. There is no doubt that the iOS is considered the more secure than the other, but iOS devices need to be aware of possible malware and viruses and be careful when downloading apps from third-party app stores. So, it is safest to download app from trusted sources. Our version, regardless of platform you are using both android and iOS can be equally vulnerable of attacks.

Updates and security patches

It is essential to upgrade your android mobile devices or tablet to the latest version for security. As these updates are designed to help protect your Android devices against the latest security threats. Ignoring these updates could put your phone or tablet at risk. Apple’s iOS updates prompt users to install them when released. Owners of both can turn automatic updating on their mobile devices for the latest version of their operating system.

Hardware Integration

As most of the security of an android device rely on the hardware. Many manufactures are making Android built in features as a security solution, pre-installed in phones, tablets, and wearable devices to provide a more secure booting process. Samsung Knox is a good example for the instance.

What can both do better?

Many users find Android more attractive as of more open operating system which means you need to be more cautious. But that’s does not mean you are safe with iOS; you need to be cautious here too. Download from reputable sources only and for Android just stick to the Google play store only. If you do venture outside Google Play, you could likely increase your chances of downloading an infected app. The same goes for iOS. It’s best to go to the Apple App Store.
